Marsupial stand off

Despite its diminutive dimensions, the little possum has a big attitude. This afternoon, caught out in the open by a curious pademelon and an inquisitive brush turkey, the possum stood its ground and saw them both off.

Anyone with such big eyes can win a staring contest!

I do think the are "cute" but with that death stare and those claws, I would have made a quick exit myself!

Aydin, this little possum has a serious stare. The paddie and turkey both gave up really quickly.

Meggs, you should hear the screams and hisses that go with the stare and claws!

Russell, it's pretty busy here at times! The paddie thought the possum had some food (it didn't) and the turkey was curious about all the activity.

they ARE cute...i guess they've learned to stand their ground. and just in case the death stare...or the claws don't scare 'em away...maybe the hissing will!

i guess those 'possums don't 'play dead' like they do here! not hardly! but our possums do have pretty hardy hisses!

They definitely don't play dead! Whenever I read about Virginia opossums, I'm always reminded of the Simpsons' encounter with one: "We call him Bitey". (It was living in the cab of the Springfield Monorail.)
