Fire season

It's that time of year. Here are the latest bushfire hotspots detected by NASA's earth observation satellites Terra and Aqua. Data from these satellites are analysed by Geoscience Australia and made available through Sentinel.

But Australia is not the only tinderbox right now. Here is NASA's map showing the distribution of fires detected by the satellites over a 10-day period at the end of December. (Click image to embiggen or see the original here.)

Wow, that's a whole lot of smoke and fire!

It is! I was surprised to see the extent of the current fires in SE Qld (because I haven't been listening to the radio or reading the news), but the global overview from NASA is just astonishing.

While flying overland down to Brisbane we certainly noticed the extent of the bushfires in the south-east. The extent of fires in Africa, South America and Asia is just amazing.
