In which I see my first grebes for the year
Normally, they're so abundant that I'm fighting them off with sticks. But the first half of 2008 was entirely grebe-less.
My fears that there had been a nation-wide crash in populations were allayed — slightly — by this couple of Australasian grebes, which I saw today at Serendip Sanctuary. I still have concerns … they were behaving in an entirely abnormal fashion. Not once did they dive as I was taking a photo. No shots of fluffy white arses or rings of ripples where the fluffy arses had been only a moment before. In fact, they swam towards me. And that was a bit unnerving. I'm not sure what they had planned but I, for one, welcome our new grebe overlords.
